Hello from Boston! Dr. Howard Weiner, MD. We are with Dr. Howard Weiner, MD. He is Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. He is Director and Founder of the Partners Multiple Sclerosis Center and Co-director of the Center for Neurologic Diseases at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Weiner graduated from Dartmouth College with a major in philosophy, and received his MD from the University of Colorado Medical School. Dr. Howard Weiner, MD, did his internship at Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer in Israel and his medical residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and his neurology residency at the Harvard Longwood Program in Neurology. Dr. Weiner studied immunology at University of Colorado and then at Harvard Medical School, where he has conducted seminal research in multiple sclerosis, neurodegenerative disease, and innate immunity system for the last 45 years. Dr. Weiner established Partners Multiple Sclerosis Center in 2000. Dr. Howard Weiner, MD, pioneered the use of immunotherapy and has investigated immune abnormalities in multiple sclerosis, including the role of innate immune system and regulatory T-cells. Dr. Weiner also pioneered the use of mucosal immune system for the treatment of autoimmune and other diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and stroke. Based on his work vaccines are being tested in multiple sclerosis, diabetes and, most recently, in Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Howard Weiner, MD, is the author of "Curing Multiple Sclerosis: how science in solving the mystery of multiple sclerosis" - the book that chronicles the history of multiple sclerosis research and treatment and his 40-plus years of research and clinical treatment of multiple sclerosis. In 2004 Harvard Medical School honored Dr. Weiner with the establishment of the Howard L. Weiner Professor of Neurology Endowed Chair. Dr. Howard Weiner, MD, has authored and co-authored over 630 articles in international peer-reviewed scientific journals on the topics of multiple sclerosis, autoimmune and neurodegenerative disease diagnosis and treatment, and fundamental immunology research. Dr. Weiner also wrote and directed a feature-length documentary film titled "What is Life: the Movie", a production that explores the big questions of life that everyone faces and for this there is no clear answers: God, the nature of the soul, how to attain meaning in one's life, evil and destiny. Dr. Weiner has particular expertise in innate immune system function. Vaccines against Multiple Sclerosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease are being developed based on Dr. Weiner’s research. Dr. Weiner also produced a documentary movie “What is Life: The Movie”.
