Speed limits help to make pedestrians and car passengers safer. Medical second opinion helps to make sure preliminary diagnosis is correct. Medical second opinion also helps to choose the best treatment for your medical condition before it becomes an emergency. Seek medical second opinion on your medical problem to avoid visit to Emergency Room later. Wearing seat belts reduces trauma and injuries if car accident happens. Seat belts for rear passengers are very important. Children should be in properly selected and secured child protective car seat. Car safety measures children and adults. Road safety tips for drivers. Dr. Anton Titov, MD. Motor vehicle accidents (MVA) is a big part of the Emergency Medicine. Car accidents (and head trauma) are a big problem for the society. What are the most important factors for safety on the roads? What is important to know and to do when motor vehicle accident happens? What are challenges for the emergency medicine services in helping victims of car accidents? Dr. Sam Shen, MD. Director of Emergency Medicine, Stanford University. Several variables helped to dramatically improve the safety on the roads. Laws that demand that all patients who travel by car to wear seat belts helped to reduce severity of trauma in car accidents. People think about wearing car seat belt as common sense now. But 40 – 50 years ago patients did not wear seat belts in cars. Car child safety seats help to reduce injury in car accidents. Requirement to wear a helmet when on bicycle or motorcycle helped to reduce injury. Helmet laws vary state by state. But many states have helmet laws. Speed limits helped to improve safety on the roads. It could be 55 miles per hour, or 65 or 75 miles per hour speed limits. It depends on a type of road. Over the last 20 or 30 years requirement to wear seat belt and speed limits helped to improve safety on the roads. These factors have dramatically reduced severity of trauma after car accidents. emergency medicine doctors know that. Motor vehicle accidents could be a rollover or a high-speed collision. One of the biggest factors that we notice about trauma victim of motor vehicle accident is whether they were wearing seat belt at the time of the accident. Wearing seat belt dramatically reduces the number and severity of injuries that a trauma patient has after a car accident. It is common to see a severe car accident, when a person drives at very high speed. Person then crashes the car, car perhaps rolls over. Rollover car accident. But the person comes out with very minor injuries because they were wearing a seat belt. Certainly if they were not wearing a seat belt, it would be a completely different clinical situation. Sometimes someone does not wear seat belt, trauma after car accident is likely to be very severe. Dr. Anton Titov, MD. Let me emphasize this important point. Sometimes car accident happens, a person has much better chance to survive car crash if the person wears a seat belt. Person who wears seat belt will have less trauma if car accident happens. Wearing seat belt is important for drivers, for front passengers and for rear seat passengers. Dr. Sam Shen, MD. Absolutely I would definitely agree with that statement. Dr. Anton Titov, MD. What about the child seats and car safety for children? What are the most important aspects for child safety in a car? Dr. Sam Shen, MD. Certainly. There are very specific guidelines that advise when specific type of child care safety seat should be used. This guidelines differ for children based on different age, height and weight. But just the utilization of appropriate child seats also dramatically reduces the chance of injury to a child during car accident (motor vehicle accident). We see many car accidents where there are children involved. Sometimes a child correctly sits in child protective car seat, the probability and severity of trauma are dramatically reduced.
