Dr. Anton Titov, MD. What is the best way to keep the heart healthy? Dr. Dale Adler, MD. You know it is this. From everything we learned, an optimal weight goes a very long way. Because when people are overweight there’s a higher blood volume. There’s more blood flow coming into the heart every time. There’s going to be some tendency for the heart to stretch. When people are overweight, they tend to have more high blood pressure. This means a heart is going to overwork. Heart muscle can become thicker. Being overweight leads to diabetes. So we know that’s going to be very bad for the blood vessels. Diabetes is even worse for the cholesterol. Dr. Dale Adler, MD. So we say this is how to keep heart healthy. Maintain an optimum weight. Cardiovascular fitness is the other key thing. One study after another has shown that the people who go out of their way to push themselves physically lifelong. Such people retain a compliance to their heart. Dr. Dale Adler, MD. So in between heart beats, the heart is better able to relax. These people are also able to do a good job for keeping their blood vessels in better order. So I would say this. It sounds boring, but optimal weight and some kind of real good fitness program will go a very long way to keep heart healthy all your life. Dr. Anton Titov, MD.
